Junior Tennis Players Bring Home North South Cup

Nugget Column #20 – Tuesday September 12th, 2017

For the sixth consecutive season, the “North South Cup” inter-club challenge between the North Bay Granite Club’s junior tennis team and the Midhurst Tennis Club’s Simcoe Skyhawks was held and resulted in a positive experience for all involved.

The clubs take turns hosting this event and this year our star players travelled to Barrie with a mission to take back a trophy that has only been captured by the North once in the previous five bids (2013).

Match format was timed 30-minute rounds to a maximum of one set. Each match won earned a point for the team and North Bay got off to a hot start sweeping the yellow ball doubles matches 4-0. Green ball outcomes allowed the Skyhawks back in the race, however no pride was lost with matches slipping away by as little as a single point.

Nearing the end of the day the teams were neck and neck; and there was magnificent pressure on those scheduled to play in the final matches. The crowd support for the North Bay team was electrifying with several of the sixteen players’ parents in the stands. And when the felt hit the asphalt for the last time on Saturday the northerners set off like a bomb; the north won 13-10!

Celebrations continued beyond the trophy presentation and over to Moose Winooski’s where the players, their parents, and coach Fransua feasted in the glory of their success.

The 2017 North Bay team consisted of: Andriana Nadeau, Nate Hummel, Olivia Popp, Ava Morin, Zach Kizell, Jared Gagne, Tahlia Cornthwaite, Chloe Popp, Emma Shea, Malik Bradley, Paul Fuzy, Adrian Catahan, Ryan O’Donnell, Justin Perron, Keean Burman, and Maggie Parker.
